Engineers Without Borders Clean Water Project in Yoro, Honduras

2.5 billion people in the world do not have access to adequate sanitation; this is almost two fifths of the world's population. Water is a necessity, taken for granted in the United States, but in the rural village of El Convento, Honduras, clean water is not easily accessible. The water source currently available for the community is a polluted stream trickling through the small village of 45 families. Water in El Convento is extremely poor quality and contains chemical contaminants and microorganisms that cause frequent sickness. The children and the elderly are most commonly those who get ill from contaminated water. In addition, these sources are far from the people that need them for their homes and fields. Families need to spend hours each day walking to collect water just to fulfill their basic needs. Despite this harsh reality, these community members are some of the over one-billion people in the world who do not have access to this basic human need which creates a healthy living environment.
Water supply is more than just a human health and environmental issue – the lack of easily accessible water limits the community’s potential for educational and economic growth. The people who gather water on a daily basis, usually women and children, have less time to devote to tending their fields or attending school. El Convento not only lacks basic water supply, but has few economic assets. Many of the villagers are farmers or factory workers who make $3.00 per day and cannot otherwise afford the capital cost of a water system to improve their living environment. Most of the families live in two room houses made of wood and clay. Often the women will stay at home and take care of housework while the men tend the fields. El Convento is an integrated community because the villagers cannot rely on modern conveniences and must depend on each other when someone is sick or needs help. By creating an infrastructure system that distributes healthy clean water that community members do not need to walk to get, the living environment of El Convento can be increased tremendously.
Thousands of miles away in Easton, PA, a group of college students study and work to apply these academic concepts in a service-learning project to aid these types of communities. A chapter of Engineers Without Borders at Lafayette College (EWB-LC), enables students to utilize their classroom knowledge about engineering and economics in real world situations while changing lives. Through this chapter of EWB, these students and these poor farmers are partnering up on a project that is life and world changing.
The work these students do designing and building a water system will provide clean water to all the members of the community of El Convento. The system will draw water from two springs high in the mountains. The watersheds of these springs will be protected from logging, livestock and other hazards to minimize water contaminants and improve the environment around the community. Increasing the quality of the environment around the community will help clean up the stream running through the community. Communities that then, in turn, use the stream for water will be accessing cleaner and safer water.
From the springs, a six kilometer pipeline will weave down the mountains sending water toward the center of the community. Before the water reaches the community, it will be treated with 5 slow-sand filters, which use natural biological processes to remove sediment, pathogens, and other contaminants without the need for added harmful chemicals. The clean water will then be distributed to all the houses via a network of PVC pipes.
In an effort to be sustainable, the project infrastructure will allow for additional economic development opportunities. The students are working with the community to assess the feasibility of different economic opportunities that utilize the water produced in the system to grow sustainable crops such as coffee, bananas, and cacao. The students will collaborate with the community of El Convento to promote these environmentally-friendly farming practices.
These crops will then be sold by the community members in nearby markets increasing their income and capital of the project. The synergy of access to clean water and increased economic potential allows the members of the community to gain part of their life back as well as use the time they would have spent collecting water to add income. Because this project will utilize efficient methods of water distribution and disposal, there is the opportunity positively affecting the environment. Installing water disposal systems decreases runoff and erosion problems that currently affect the community, since greywater is currently thrown directly on the ground.
Because the students of Lafayette College cannot build an entire water system during several small trips throughout the year, the burden of the construction falls upon the community. The project is not EWB-LC's project; it is the community's project. The community is integral in the design process, responsible for the construction of the system, and responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the system. Even though the system is designed by EWB-LC, the ultimate decision-making comes from a community vote. They will be the ones who build this project and thereby take ownership of it. They will use their work ethic and skills combined with our expertise and capital to produce something they never thought would be possible.
By working on a project like this, ordinary students are doing extraordinary things. The students are able to take their classroom knowledge of engineering and economics and bring it out of the classroom into the real world. They are able to provide the basic amenity of water to El Convento, increasing the health and social environments within the community. They are getting an education that is nothing like anything that is possible to learn in a classroom; there is nothing like hands-on experience. Students are becoming globally-aware and socially-conscious leaders of the future.
